Online shopping saw a spike over the holidays as deal hunters fired up their smart phones and laptops to browse for boxing day bargains. On December 25, 2011 online sales grew more than 16% compared to last year.
According to IBM statistics that tracked 500 ecommerce retailers, more than 18% of all online sales on Christmas day were purchased from a mobile device. Mobile traffic increased over 117% compared to last Christmas, and sales from mobile devices increased over 172% over last year. The most common mobile device used to purchase online goods was the iPad, followed closely by the iPhone. Seven percent of all online transactions were done from an iPad, with 6.4% made on an iPhone and 5% from an Android device.
